Patna: A major controversy has erupted after independent MP Pappu Yadav made sweeping remarks about women in politics, prompting the Bihar State Women’s Commission to issue him a formal notice.

The Commission has termed his comments a serious violation of women’s dignity, warning of further action if his response fails to satisfy authorities.

The move comes after a video of his remarks went viral, drawing widespread criticism across political lines.

The MP claimed, “90% of women cannot start their political careers without entering male leaders’ bedrooms.”

He also suggested that women cannot succeed in politics without making “compromises,” raising concerns about misogynistic narratives and the safety of women in public life.

The comments quickly triggered strong reactions, particularly from the Bharatiya Janata Party.

BJP National Spokesperson Tuhin A. Sinha criticised the remarks on social media, stating, “Despicable,outrageous comments by Pappu Yadav,abusing self made women politicians. Will @priyankagandhi sack this obnoxious misogynist or does she endorse his views? Disgusting ppl.”

The controversy has further fueled political tensions, with parties using the issue to attack each other over their stance on women’s empowerment.

Bigger context: Women’s representation debate

The row comes at a time when women’s political participation is already under national discussion. Recently, a key proposal to expand women’s representation, the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, was defeated in the Lok Sabha.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had earlier reaffirmed the government’s commitment to women’s empowerment, stating that setbacks would not weaken efforts to implement reservation for women in Parliament.
