Bhubaneswar: The discovery of five baby orangutans in Balasore, Odisha, is highly unusual because orangutans are not naturally found in India. Their unexpected appearance has now triggered an investigation into possible wildlife trafficking.

Five baby orangutans found abandoned in Odisha have raised a striking question: does India naturally have wild orangutans, and could the animals survive in Indian forests?

Does India naturally have orangutans?

No. Orangutans are not native to India and do not naturally occur in Indian forests.

Their natural range is in Southeast Asia. The three living species are the Bornean orangutan, Sumatran orangutan and Tapanuli orangutan, with their wild populations restricted to parts of Borneo and Sumatra.

This makes the discovery of five baby orangutans in Odisha highly unusual and raises questions about how they reached the country.

Where do orangutans naturally live?

Orangutans are native to the tropical forests of Indonesia and Malaysia, particularly Borneo and Sumatra.

They are highly adapted to forest environments and spend much of their lives in trees. Their habitat provides the food, shelter and interconnected forest canopy they need.

India does have tropical forests capable of supporting many primate species, but orangutans are not part of India's native wildlife.

Could orangutans survive in India's wild?

The answer is more complicated than simply saying that India is too hot or too dry.

Some parts of India have tropical conditions, but temperature alone does not determine whether orangutans can survive in the wild. They require suitable habitat, food resources, forest structure and long-term ecological conditions.

The five rescued babies are also extremely young. Orangutan infants normally depend heavily on their mothers for years while learning how to find food, move through the forest and build nests.

As a result, releasing abandoned infants into an Indian forest would not be a realistic conservation solution.

So how did five baby orangutans reach Odisha?

That is the central question facing investigators.

The animals were found in the Udayapur-Talsari forest area of Balasore district, far outside the species' natural range.

Authorities are investigating possible human transportation and wildlife trafficking. The Odisha STF, Forest Department, local police and Wildlife Crime Control Bureau are examining evidence including CCTV footage and vehicle movements.

Officials have described trafficking as a strong possibility, but the exact origin and route of the animals have not yet been conclusively established.

Where are the rescued orangutans now?

The three male and two female infants have been shifted to Nandankanan Zoological Park in Bhubaneswar and placed under quarantine and veterinary observation.

Their immediate care includes medical monitoring and specialised management while authorities investigate their origin.

Any decision about their long-term future would need to take account of their welfare, legal status, origin and applicable wildlife regulations.

The Odisha discovery is significant precisely because India has no naturally occurring wild orangutan population.

That geographical fact makes the presence of five young orangutans together particularly unusual and explains why authorities are investigating possible illegal transportation rather than treating the animals as naturally occurring wildlife.

The case also highlights the difficulties involved in wildlife trafficking investigations. Finding the animals is only the first step; authorities need to establish where they came from, who transported them, how they entered India and whether an organised international network was involved.

For the rescued infants, the immediate priority is survival and specialised care. Their eventual destination will depend heavily on what investigators establish about their origin and on conservation and animal-welfare considerations.
