New Delhi: Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi extended his congratulations to Om Birla on his reelection as Speaker of the Lok Sabha for a second term, emphasising the crucial role of the opposition in representing the diverse voices of the Indian people in Parliament. Speaking on Wednesday, Gandhi expressed hope that the opposition would be granted the opportunity to advocate for the concerns and aspirations of citizens effectively.
"I congratulate you on your successful election," Gandhi addressed Birla, speaking on behalf of the INDIA alliance. "This House is the voice of the people of India. While the government holds political power, the opposition equally represents the voices of our nation's people."
Gandhi underscored the opposition's readiness to collaborate constructively, stating, "We are eager to support your efforts. I trust that you will permit us to articulate our perspectives in the House."
Highlighting the increased representation of diverse voices within the opposition compared to previous terms, Gandhi emphasised the significance of allowing these voices to be heard in parliamentary debates. "It is vital that the opposition's voice, which now represents a broader cross-section of India, is given due representation in this House," he asserted.
Gandhi rejected the notion that efficient parliamentary functioning should come at the expense of stifling opposition voices, asserting, "Efficient governance cannot be achieved by muzzling opposition. Such notions contradict democratic principles." He emphasised that the recent election results indicated a strong public expectation for the opposition to safeguard constitutional values.
"As representatives of the people, we are committed to defending the Constitution of India. It is our expectation that by enabling the opposition to speak freely, you will fulfil your duty in upholding our nation's constitutional integrity," Gandhi concluded, urging for cooperation and trust in parliamentary proceedings.
Meanwhile, Akhilesh Yadav, leader of the Samajwadi Party, congratulated Om Birla on his election as Lok Sabha Speaker, expressing hope that he would uphold impartiality by granting equal opportunities to opposition leaders. Yadav emphasised the Speaker's role in ensuring dignity within the House, urging against actions like suspending MPs, which could suppress public representatives' voices. Agencies
