Chennai: Nine workers were killed and several others injured in a major accident at the North Chennai Thermal Power Station construction site in Ennore on Tuesday.

Preliminary reports indicate that an arch under construction collapsed from a height of nearly 30 feet, trapping several migrant workers. One worker sustained grievous injuries, while more than ten others were reported to be seriously hurt. The injured were taken to Stanley Government Hospital in North Chennai for treatment.

Dr J Radhakrishnan, Secretary of the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board and Chairman of the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation Limited (TANGEDCO), visited the hospital to meet the injured workers and assess the situation.

The Avadi Police Commissionerate stated that the exact cause of the collapse is yet to be determined. Rescue operations are ongoing, and an official investigation has been launched.

According to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the deceased include four workers from Karbi Anglong district and five from Hojai district.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), CM Sarma confirmed the incident and said efforts were underway to bring back the mortal remains of the victims.
