New Delhi: Senior scientists at the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) have reassured the public that there is no new H1N1 flu strain in India. The H1N1 flu virus currently spreading in the country belongs to the A/Missouri/11/2025-like strain (clade 6B.1A.5a2a, subclade D.3.1.1), which has been circulating since 2025.

Health experts stress that there is no need to panic. The flu strains currently active in India closely match the standard flu vaccines recommended for the Northern Hemisphere, meaning existing vaccines offer good protection.

Seasonal flu, including H1N1, is usually a mild illness that goes away on its own. Most people recover with simple home care, basic medicine, and proper rest. Common symptoms are

  • High fever
  • Continuous cough
  • Headache
  • Body aches and fatigue

However, high-risk groups, such as young children, elderly people and individuals with underlying health conditions, are at a higher risk of developing complications. Health authorities advise seeing a doctor promptly if symptoms worsen or do not improve over time.

Government agencies continue to monitor flu activity closely across the country to ensure all necessary health safeguards remain in place.
