Nishant Kumar, son of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, may soon step into active politics as JD(U) leaders say the party cadre have long demanded his entry. His debut could mark a significant moment for the party’s future leadership.

Patna: Nishant Kumar, the son of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, is likely to enter active politics soon, according to leaders of the Janata Dal (United) (JD(U)), signalling a potential generational shift in the party’s leadership.
Senior JD(U) leaders indicated that discussions within the party about Nishant Kumar’s formal political debut have progressed, and an announcement could be made in the coming weeks.
Party insiders said his entry has been a long-standing demand from cadres who believe his presence could energise the organisation.
State minister and JD(U) leader Sharwan Kumar said party workers across Bihar have repeatedly urged the leadership to bring Nishant Kumar into active politics. He noted that discussions have been held within the party and that a decision regarding his future role could be finalised soon.
Speculation is also growing within political circles that Nishant Kumar could be considered for a Rajya Sabha nomination, though JD(U) leaders have not officially confirmed such plans.
With upcoming Rajya Sabha elections approaching, his name has reportedly surfaced during internal deliberations.
Nishant Kumar has largely stayed away from public life and active politics so far. Known for maintaining a low profile, he rarely appears in political programmes and has generally avoided public commentary on political issues. However, he has occasionally been seen during election campaigns or at religious events alongside his father.
His possible entry into politics carries symbolic significance for the JD(U), as Nitish Kumar has often positioned himself against dynastic politics in the past. The development therefore, marks a notable shift in the party’s approach, although leaders maintain that the demand for Nishant’s entry has come from grassroots workers rather than from the chief minister himself.
Party sources say Nishant Kumar’s induction could take place around the Holi period, after which his responsibilities within the party may be announced. Some leaders believe he may initially be given an organisational role to familiarise himself with the party structure and grassroots politics.
Political observers view the move as part of a broader effort by the JD(U) to plan for the future leadership of the party in Bihar. If Nishant Kumar formally joins politics, it could open a new chapter for the party while also adding a fresh dimension to the state’s evolving political landscape.
While the party leadership has not yet made an official announcement, JD(U) leaders say a decision on Nishant Kumar’s political role could be made soon, potentially marking his first formal step into Bihar’s active political arena.
