The Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) has introduced the DigiYatra facility, nearly two months after beginning commercial flight operations.

With this launch, NMIA joins a select group of airports across India that have implemented the Civil Aviation Ministry’s DigiYatra system. The event was streamed live at the airport, allowing passengers present to watch the inauguration ceremony on a large screen.

To mark the occasion, three passengers ceremonially cut the ribbon at the biometric entry gates and became the first travellers to use the DigiYatra e-gates at NMIA.

DigiYatra is an initiative of the Ministry of Civil Aviation aimed at making air travel faster and more seamless.

The system uses facial recognition technology to verify a passenger’s identity at key checkpoints in the airport. Instead of showing physical documents or boarding passes repeatedly, passengers can use their faces as a digital identity to move through the airport.

The system confirms a traveller’s identity, flight details and other required information digitally, helping to reduce queues and speed up check-in and boarding.

According to airport officials, the system includes safeguards to ensure data privacy and security while offering a contactless and paperless travel experience.

The DigiYatra facility offers several advantages, like

  • Faster entry into the airport terminal
  • Quicker check-in and boarding process
  • Paperless travel within the airport
  • One-time registration for domestic travel

The initiative is designed to make airport procedures more efficient and convenient for passengers.

How to Register for DigiYatra

Passengers who wish to use DigiYatra must complete a one-time registration process before travelling.

Step 1: Download the DigiYatra app from the App Store or Google Play Store.

Step 2: Register using DigiLocker or Aadhaar to create a verified digital credential.

Step 3: Click on “Add Credentials” in the app and follow the instructions.

Step 4: Upload travel details under “Your Upcoming Travel.”

Passengers who have registered can use the DigiYatra gates at the airport. At the airport entry gate, passengers scan their faces at the DigiYatra e-gate for identity verification.

Before security, they complete the verification process at the designated Face Pod. After security checks, verification is done again at another Face Pod. Passengers can then board the aircraft through biometric-enabled departure gates.

With this rollout, Navi Mumbai International Airport becomes part of the expanding DigiYatra network across India. The system is expected to improve passenger flow and reduce waiting times, especially during peak travel hours.

The launch marks another step in India’s efforts to modernise airport infrastructure and enhance the overall travel experience.
