They informed enumerators that they don't belong to any backward caste, making the survey inapplicable to them

Bengaluru: Infosys founder Narayana Murthy and his wife, author and philanthropist Sudha Murty, have declined to participate in Karnataka's ongoing socio-economic and educational survey.
The couple informed enumerators who visited their residence in Jayanagar, Bengaluru, that they do not belong to any backward caste and thus, the survey is not applicable to them. They formally conveyed their decision by signing and returning the survey form provided by the officials.
The survey, which commenced on September 22, is being conducted by the Karnataka State Commission for Backward Classes.
It aims to collect detailed data on the social, economic, educational, and caste backgrounds of the state's population. The exercise is estimated to cost ₹420 crore and involves a 60-question format designed to gather comprehensive information.
Participation in the survey is voluntary, as affirmed by the Karnataka High Court, which ruled that enumerators cannot compel people to answer questions. This legal stance supports the Murthys' decision to opt out, as they do not fall under any backward category and therefore see no relevance in participating.
The caste census has faced various challenges, including technical glitches and concerns over the accuracy of data collection. Despite these issues, the Karnataka government remains committed to completing the survey by the announced deadline.
