A fire broke out inside Terminal 1 of Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) on Thursday evening, triggering panic among passengers and prompting a swift emergency response.

The blaze, which originated around 6:10 pm, was later brought under control within minutes, officials confirmed.

According to the Mumbai Fire Brigade, the fire was reported in the cable trays, switch boxes, and parts of the seating area inside Terminal 1B.

Thick smoke quickly spread across sections of the terminal, with several videos circulating on social media showing passengers navigating through smoke-filled interiors. Watch the viral clipping below:

Fire officials classified the incident as a Level-1 blaze, indicating a minor fire. The flames were confined to the ground floor of the terminal building, preventing a major escalation.

Chief Fire Officer Ravindra Ambulgekar said that multiple fire tenders, along with police and civic ward staff, rushed to the spot immediately after the alert was received.

Firefighting operations were initiated promptly, ensuring that the situation was contained before it could spread to other parts of the airport.

In an official statement, a CSMIA spokesperson attributed the incident to a suspected short circuit.

“A minor fire was reported at Terminal 1 due to a short circuit at 18:10 hrs. The fire was immediately brought under control by emergency response teams within minutes. Airport operations remain unaffected,” the statement read.

Authorities confirmed that no injuries or casualties have been reported so far. However, sources indicated that some electronic systems were briefly impacted due to the incident, leading to temporary disruptions before normalcy was restored.

Despite the dramatic visuals, airport operations, including flight schedules, continued without major disruption, offering relief to passengers and airlines alike.

The incident has once again raised concerns about fire safety preparedness at critical infrastructure hubs.

Officials have launched a detailed investigation to determine the exact cause of the short circuit and assess whether additional safety measures are required.

This comes just weeks after a separate fire incident at a hotel near the airport in Andheri, underlining the need for heightened vigilance in high-density urban zones.

Further updates are awaited as authorities continue their probe into the cause of the blaze.
