Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL) announced that the planned closure is aimed at ensuring continued safety, reliability and adherence

Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport will suspend all runway operations for six hours on 20 November 2025, from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm, the airport operator said on Thursday.
Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL) announced that the planned closure is aimed at ensuring continued safety, reliability and adherence to global aviation standards. The airport has two intersecting runways — the main runway 09/27 and the secondary runway 14/32 — which together handle around 950 flights a day, making it the second-busiest airport in India after Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport.
A Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) was issued well in advance to allow airlines and other aviation stakeholders to adjust flight schedules and manpower planning. MIAL said that timely communication enables seamless coordination and helps minimise passenger inconvenience. A NOTAM contains information essential for personnel involved in flight operations.
The maintenance work will involve detailed inspections, surface repairs and technical assessments of runway lighting, markings and drainage systems, the operator added.
Navi Mumbai Airport to Begin Flights from 25 December
Meanwhile, Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) will begin commercial operations on 25 December with 23 scheduled daily departures. For the first month, the airport will operate for 12 hours a day — from 8 am to 8 pm — handling up to 10 flight movements per hour.
NMIA, the second major airport in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 8 October. In its initial phase, it will manage around 120 aircraft movements daily. From February 2026, the airport will shift to round-the-clock operations, expanding to 34 scheduled daily departures.
The first phase of NMIA has been constructed at a cost of ₹19,650 crore. Spread across 1,160 hectares, it includes one terminal and one runway, with an annual passenger handling capacity of 20 million.
