New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will not address the General Debate at the upcoming United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), according to the revised provisional list of speakers released for the high-level session later this month.

UNGA’s 80th anniversary and main theme

The 80th session of the UNGA is set to open on September 9, marking a milestone as the UN celebrates its 80th anniversary. The central theme for the session is ‘Better Together: 80 Years and More for Peace, Development and Human Rights.’ A high-level commemorative meeting is scheduled for September 22 to mark the occasion.

Dates and India’s representation

The General Debate is slated for September 23 to 29, with Brazil speaking first, followed by the United States as per tradition. The updated list of speakers shows India will now be represented by a “minister” instead of the Prime Minister, with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar expected to address the General Assembly on September 27. Initially, a provisional list in July had scheduled Prime Minister Modi to deliver India’s address on September 26.

Other leaders scheduled and procedural updates

On the same day as India’s address, the heads of government from Israel, China, Pakistan, and Bangladesh are also slated to speak during the high-level debate.

The UNGA has clarified the speakers’ list remains provisional and may undergo revisions as the session approaches. Adjustments in schedules and speakers are routine in the lead-up to the high-level week, with continued updates reflected in the official proceedings.
