The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has ordered a temporary suspension of television ratings for news channels for four weeks or until further notice, citing concerns over sensationalised coverage of the ongoing conflict in West Asia.

In a statement, the ministry said it had observed “unwarranted sensationalism and speculative content” by certain news channels covering the Israel-Iran conflict, which could potentially create panic among the public, particularly for those with friends or family in the affected regions.

As a precautionary measure, the ministry directed the Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) to withhold Television Rating Points (TRPs) for news channels during the period. “In the public interest, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting hereby directs M/s BARC to immediately withhold reporting the Television Rating Points for News TV Channels for a period of four weeks or until further directions, whichever is earlier,” the statement added.

The suspension comes amid escalating tensions in West Asia, which began on 28 February after airstrikes by the US and Israel on Iran. Tehran has since launched retaliatory strikes in Israel and Gulf countries hosting American military bases.

The conflict has disrupted air travel, stranding many Indian nationals in Gulf countries, as flights to and from the affected areas have been suspended or are operating in a limited capacity.

The ministry emphasised that the move was aimed at maintaining public calm and ensuring responsible broadcasting during the crisis.
