Chennai: A matrimonial website has been ordered to pay Rs 10,000 as compensation due to the unsavoury conduct of its employees. The Tiruppur District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission issued the order, directing the website to compensate the user who faced the issue. In addition to the compensation, the website is also required to refund Rs 3,766, which was paid as the registration fee by the user.
The decision came after a complaint filed by Indira Rani, who sought the website's services to find a bride for her son. Despite registering on the website, Indira Rani was informed by the staff that her son, being 33 years old, would only receive proposals from widows or divorcees. Displeased with this, she requested a refund. Although the website initially agreed to pay in cash, they later maintained that they would provide a cheque. However, after issuing the cheque, the website failed to disburse the amount. Indira Rani subsequently sent a notice but received no response, prompting her to approach the consumer commission.
Considering the mental distress faced by the complainant, the commission ordered the website to pay Rs 10,000 as compensation. Additionally, the commission instructed that the amount should carry an interest of 8% per annum from the date of the order until the payment is made.
