Veteran journalist and author Mark Tully, widely regarded as a chronicler of India, died on Sunday at the age of 90, according to a close friend. He passed away at a private hospital.

Born in Calcutta, now Kolkata, on October 24, 1935, Tully served as the BBC’s bureau chief in New Delhi for 22 years, during which he became one of the most recognisable foreign correspondents reporting on India.

An acclaimed author, Tully wrote extensively on Indian society, politics and culture. His notable works include No Full Stops in India, India in Slow Motion and The Heart of India.

He was also the presenter of the BBC Radio 4 programme Something Understood, which earned him wide appreciation among British audiences.

In recognition of his contribution to journalism and his work on India, Tully was knighted in 2002 and was awarded the Padma Bhushan by the Government of India in 2005.
