Uttar Pradesh: A 33-year-old man from Auraiya in Uttar Pradesh raped and killed his 14-year-old cousin hours after she tied a rakhi on him. He later confessed to the crime and was taken into custody, the police reported on Tuesday.

As per an NDTV report, the accused Surjeet visited his uncle's house on the morning of August 9, where his sister tied a rakhi for him. That same night, after drinking heavily, he went back to the house in an inebriated state and raped the sleeping teenager.

He then killed her and suspended her body from a noose.

Her father was reportedly asleep in another room in the house but heard nothing. He alerted the police when he discovered the girl's body the next day.

Surjeet returned to the house while the police probe was ongoing the following day, and attempted to mislead the investigators. He repeatedly spoke for the family members, preventing them from answering questions directly, which aroused the investigators' suspicion.

Officials stated that they could tell it was not a case of suicide as soon as they arrived at the house and observed bloodstains in several locations. When the police began questioning the family members, they noticed that Surjeet was constantly with them.

A post-mortem examination confirmed the rape, according to Auraiya Superintendent of Police Abhijeet Shankar.

Surjeet was taken into custody and confessed to the crime during questioning.
