Kolkata: Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI) MP Saayoni Ghosh has described Mamata Banerjee as a ‘leader of great stature’ and said the former West Bengal Chief Minister would overcome the latest political crisis surrounding the Trinamool Congress (TMC).

Ghosh’s remarks came amid the ongoing dispute over the TMC’s name and election symbol following the Election Commission’s interim decision to freeze the party’s original name, All India Trinamool Congress, and its traditional ‘Flowers and Grass’ symbol.

The poll panel subsequently allotted the Mamata Banerjee-led faction the name ‘Mamata All India Trinamool Congress’ and the ‘Football Player’ symbol for the upcoming bypolls.

Speaking about the situation, Ghosh said Banerjee had faced several difficult situations during her political career and had managed to emerge from them.

She expressed confidence that the TMC chief would be able to overcome the current challenge as well.

‘She is a leader of great stature. She has come out of many crises before. She will overcome this one too,’ Ghosh said, according to reports.

Ghosh also pointed to the possible impact of the change in the party’s electoral symbol, saying that the development could create confusion among voters.

The comments come against the backdrop of a major political rupture within the TMC.

Ghosh was among a group of MPs who broke ranks with Banerjee following the party’s defeat in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly election.

She subsequently joined the NCPI along with other rebel TMC parliamentarians.

Banerjee’s faction is currently contesting the October 6 bypolls under its newly allotted name and symbol.

The Election Commission’s decision followed the emergence of rival claims over control of the party, with the poll panel directing the two factions to contest the bypolls under separate identities.

The TMC’s traditional name and symbol have consequently become the centre of an ongoing political and legal dispute. Banerjee has challenged the Election Commission’s decision in the Supreme Court, seeking restoration of the party’s original name and ‘Jora Ghash Phul’ symbol.

The apex court is now set to hear the challenge. Ghosh’s latest comments are notable given her political journey over the past few months.

She had earlier been one of the prominent faces associated with Banerjee’s party organisation before joining the group of dissident MPs.

Banerjee subsequently removed Ghosh from her position as president of the TMC’s youth wing as part of an organisational reshuffle amid the internal turmoil.

Despite the political differences, Ghosh’s latest remarks acknowledge Banerjee’s long record of navigating political crises.

Her comments come at a time when the TMC is preparing for the upcoming bypolls while simultaneously dealing with an internal organisational split and the legal challenge over its original identity.
