New Delhi: President Droupadi Murmu’s recent journey from Delhi to Mathura on the Maharaja Special train has turned the spotlight on this luxury marvel of Indian Railways.

Naturally, many are curious about what the train looks like inside, where it stops, and whether ordinary passengers can experience it. Here’s a closer look:

A Five-Star Hotel on Wheels

The President traveled on the Presidential Special, better known as IRCTC’s Maharaja Special train. This is one of Indian Railways most luxurious trains, often described as a five-star hotel moving on tracks.

Operated by IRCTC between October and April, it offers passengers a royal experience with lavish interiors, fine dining, and personalized service.

Yes, the Public Can Travel Too

The good news? The Maharaja Special is not exclusive to VIPs. Common travelers can also book a journey on it, although the fare is steep due to its premium amenities.

Normally, the train is parked in a restricted yard in Delhi, and the public cannot view it from outside. The only way to see and experience it is by booking a journey through IRCTC. This service has been running since 2010. 

Special Arrangements for the President

Whenever the President is scheduled to travel, Indian Railways receives prior intimation and makes extensive changes. The train is relabeled as the “President Special Train”, a process that takes nearly 10–12 days.

The full rake comprises 16 luxury coaches, plus two additional coaches reserved for railway personnel, making it an 18-coach train. Even these support coaches are painted in the same colors to maintain uniformity.

Blue Book Protocol in Action

During the President’s travel, the Blue Book protocol is strictly enforced. No heavy traffic is allowed on the same route, and no train can overtake the Presidential Special.

Trains from the opposite direction are halted at the nearest station or outer signal until the President’s train passes.

The Presidential Special runs at a speed of around 90 km/h, and apart from the railway staff coaches, the rest of the train is fully occupied by Rashtrapati Bhavan officials, who coordinate the schedule with the Railways.
