Lok Sabha to reconvene shortly after adjournment over demand for Shah's reply on student crackdown

New Delhi: The Lok Sabha was adjourned till 12 noon on Wednesday shortly after proceedings began, as Opposition members staged protests demanding Union Home Minister Amit Shah's presence in the House and a reply on the police crackdown on students.

MPs of the INDIA bloc raised slogans of "Grih Mantri Sadan Mein Aao", disrupting proceedings and forcing the Chair to adjourn the House.

The disruption came on a day when the Lok Sabha was scheduled to resume discussion on the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026, commonly referred to as the anti-paper leak Bill.

Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi is expected to participate in the debate at around 12.30 pm, making it one of the key highlights of the day's proceedings.

Ahead of the debate, Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju expressed hope that Rahul Gandhi would address the legislation in detail.

"Today, I have expectations, specifically from Rahul Gandhi. I hope that in a speech lasting 20-30 minutes, he speaks about the bill for at least five minutes. It is not right to avoid speaking on such an important bill," Rijiju said.

Apart from the anti-paper leak Bill, Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to introduce the Registration of Births and Deaths (Amendment) Bill, 2026, according to the revised List of Business.

Meanwhile, in the Rajya Sabha, CPM MP John Brittas alleged that Delhi Police had entered the Left parties' office to arrest student leader Aishe Ghosh, prompting sharp protests from the Opposition. Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge described the incident as "shameful" and questioned who had authorised the police action, while Leader of the House J.P. Nadda defended the police, calling it a routine law-and-order matter and accusing the Opposition of sensationalising the issue.
