New Delhi: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Friday took "serious note" of certain objectionable remarks made by BJP member Ramesh Bidhuri in the House and warned him of "strict action" if such behaviour is repeated in the future, officials said.
Bidhuri's remarks targeting Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) member Kunwar Danish Ali during a discussion on the "success of Chandrayaan-3" in the Lok Sabha triggered a furore, with opposition leaders calling for strict action against him. The officials said the speaker has warned the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader of strict action if such behaviour is repeated.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh had expressed regret in the House immediately after Bidhuri made the objectionable remarks on Thursday night. Singh said he had not heard the remarks and urged the Chair to delete them from the proceedings if they have hurt the opposition members.
Congress member K Suresh, who was in the Chair, said he had already directed the officials to expunge the remarks.
"I express regret if the opposition is hurt by the remarks made by the member," the defence minister said.
Singh's gesture was appreciated by the members by thumping the desks.
The Congress on Friday took strong objections to BJP MP Ramesh Bidhuri's remarks in the Lok Sabha and demanded his suspension from the House.
Terming the remarks as an insult to all MPs, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said the apology offered by Union Minister Rajnath Singh was a mere eyewash and not sufficient.
Strict action should be taken against him, he demanded.
The Goa Congress on Friday condemned the objectionable remarks made byBidhuri against Ali in the Lok Sabha.
BidIn a post on 'X', Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) president Amit Patkar said, “This is the culture taught by @BJP4India where such abusive words are been used by an MP against fellow MP. Ramesh Bidhuri has brought down Parliament's image to a new low. Yeh kaise ‘sanskar' hai @JPNadda? And irony is Former Minister @drharshvardhan laughing? Awful. Shameful.”
