New Delhi: The Monsoon Session of Parliament got off to a stormy start on Monday, with the Lok Sabha being adjourned till 12 noon following noisy protests by Opposition members over the alleged NEET examination irregularities and other issues.

The session, which will continue until 13 August, opened amid expectations of intense political confrontations, with the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) preparing to introduce a series of key reform Bills while the Opposition sought to corner the government on a range of contentious matters.

The first day witnessed disruptions as Opposition MPs pressed for discussions on the NEET controversy, triggering protests in the Lok Sabha and forcing the House to be adjourned shortly after proceedings began.

he Rajya Sabha was adjourned till 12 noon on Monday after Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge raised the issue of the alleged NEET paper leak and ongoing student protests on the first day of the Monsoon Session of Parliament.

After the House assembled, Kharge sought to raise the issue, saying it concerned the future of lakhs of students and referring to the ongoing protests by Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) at Delhi's Jantar Mantar.

"You have allowed me to present my views regarding this paper leak and the NEET examination scandal. This is a matter concerning students; I am speaking about the futures of lakhs of children. Thousands of students have gathered at Jantar Mantar for this cause. A lathi-charge has taken place there. The government is trying to use force, suppress voices, and drive them away," he said in the House.

Following his remarks, Rajya Sabha Speaker CP Radhakrishnan adjourned the House till 12 noon.

PM Modi calls for constructive session

Ahead of the session, Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged Members of Parliament to ensure productive and meaningful debates, expressing hope that both the seasonal monsoon and the Monsoon Session would prove fruitful.

The Prime Minister also highlighted India's economic resilience, saying the country had recorded 7.7 per cent economic growth despite challenges arising from the conflict in West Asia. He also praised recent achievements in sectors such as space, including the success of Skyroot Aerospace.

Key Bills on government's agenda

The Centre has lined up an extensive legislative agenda for the session, including the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026, the Income-tax (Amendment) Bill, 2026, the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development (Amendment) Bill, 2026, and the Supreme Court Amendment Bill, 2026, which seeks to increase the sanctioned strength of Supreme Court judges.

The government is also expected to take up the Viksit Bharat Shiksha Adhishthan Bill, 2025, along with proposed amendments to the Registration of Births and Deaths Act and the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act.

With the Opposition preparing to raise issues including the NEET row and other political controversies, the session is expected to witness frequent clashes alongside crucial legislative business in the coming weeks.
