Comedian Kunal Kamra has moved the Madras High Court seeking transit anticipatory bail after multiple FIRs were filed against him in Maharashtra over his remarks about Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. With legal trouble mounting, Kamra is seeking protection from arrest while he prepares to contest the charges. The controversy erupted after Kamra referred to Shinde as a "gaddar" (traitor) in his latest YouTube stand-up special, "Naya Bharat". His remarks drew sharp criticism from political circles, leading to legal action against him.
Mumbai Police summons Kamra, intensifies investigation
Earlier this week, Mumbai Police issued a second summon to Kamra, asking him to appear for questioning. His lawyer had initially sought a seven-day extension, but after Kamra failed to appear, a new date was set based on legal consultation.
Police officials stated that their investigation is expanding to determine whether Kamra has previously made satirical comments about other politicians, actors, or sportspersons. If further violations are found, additional cases may be registered against him.
Political backlash and vandalism incident
Kamra's "gaddar" joke has led to strong political condemnation, with Shiv Sena leaders and others demanding strict action. Amid the uproar, Shiv Sena workers allegedly vandalised The Habitat comedy club in Mumbai, where Kamra had previously performed.
In response, Kamra mocked the attack in a new video, criticising the party's reaction to his joke.
Government's stance on the controversy
Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar stated that Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had already addressed the issue, assuring that legal action would follow due process. Speaking in the state Assembly, Fadnavis remarked that while freedom of expression is important, it cannot be misused to spread "tyranny".
