Krishnanagar: West Bengal politics witnessed fresh controversy after female workers of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) allegedly gathered outside the Krishnanagar District and Sessions Court carrying eggs and rotten tomatoes, claiming they would throw them at Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra if she appeared in court.

The BJP workers had publicly announced that they were waiting for the Krishnanagar MP and planned to hurl eggs and rotten tomatoes at her as a mark of protest.

However, Moitra did not appear before the court on Saturday, and no such incident took place. The episode has nevertheless sparked a political storm in Nadia district.

Since the change of government in the state, several TMC leaders have been arrested on corruption charges.

In some cases, eggs have been thrown at leaders while they were being taken to courts or police stations.

Against that backdrop, a section of BJP Mahila Morcha workers assembled outside the Krishnanagar court premises on Saturday.

According to BJP workers, Moitra was expected to appear in court in connection with an old case.

Acting on that information, they gathered outside the court carrying eggs and rotten tomatoes. Speaking to the media, some of the protesters said they intended to throw them at the MP if she arrived.

Explaining their protest, BJP workers said it was aimed at opposing Moitra’s past controversial remarks about Goddess Kali and her stance on women's rights and safety.

They alleged that her comments had hurt religious sentiments and justified their demonstration as a symbolic protest.

Although Moitra did not attend the court hearing, news of the protest quickly reached her. The Trinamool MP later responded through a social media post, warning those involved in the alleged plan.

‘I am not Ujjwal Biswas or any other leader. I am an elected Member of Parliament chosen by the people,’ Moitra said. She warned that all individuals whose faces were visible in videos and photographs could face legal action.

The Krishnanagar MP said she would first lodge a police complaint and, if necessary, approach the courts.

She added that she was prepared to take the matter all the way to the High Court and even the Supreme Court if required.

Moitra further stated that any unlawful act directed against her would invite legal consequences and that specific provisions of law would be invoked.

In a sharp message to the BJP workers, she remarked that those seen in the footage appeared to be educated women from respectable families but should be prepared for possible jail time if they crossed legal limits.

The incident has triggered a fresh political debate in Krishnanagar, with questions being raised about whether such forms of political protest are appropriate within court premises.
