Kolkata Police enforces strict Muharram restrictions, permitting only traditional processions under heightened citywide security measures.

Kolkata: Kolkata Police has enforced a series of strict restrictions for Muharram processions across the city, allowing only traditional processions while banning new rallies, DJ music, and the display of weapons to ensure peaceful observance and maintain communal harmony.
The directives, issued by Lalbazar, state that only Muharram processions that have been held traditionally over the years will be permitted after obtaining the necessary police clearance.
All police stations have been instructed not to grant permission for any new processions this year following a review of security arrangements by senior police officials.
The key restrictions include:
- No new Muharram processions: Only traditional processions with prior police permission will be allowed.
- Complete ban on weapons: Carrying or displaying weapons or weapon-like objects during processions has been prohibited.
- No DJ music: DJs have been banned, although microphones and loudspeakers may be used within court-prescribed noise limits.
- Restrictions on tall tazias: Organisers have been advised not to construct excessively tall tazias to prevent accidents involving overhead power and communication lines.
- No inflammatory messages: Authorities have directed organisers not to broadcast provocative or sensitive speeches or announcements during the processions.
- Mandatory coordination with police: Organisers must coordinate with local police stations regarding procession routes, timings, security arrangements and crowd management.
To ensure peaceful observance, Kolkata Police has deployed additional personnel along major procession routes and in sensitive areas across the city.
CCTV surveillance, traffic regulation and quick response teams have also been strengthened to prevent any untoward incidents.
Officials said the measures are precautionary and aimed at ensuring Muharram is observed peacefully while maintaining public safety and communal harmony across Kolkata.
