Srinagar: The higher reaches of Kashmir experienced the first snowfall of the season, while rain lashed the plains of the Valley on Sunday, marking the beginning of the 40-day period of severe winter cold, locally known as Chillai Kalan.
The long nearly three-month dry spell was broken as rain and snow helped wash away suspended particulate matter (SPM), significantly improving air quality across the region. Residents, especially those with chest ailments, welcomed the seasonal change, enjoying cleaner air and dust-free surroundings.
Tourist destinations like Gulmarg and Sonamarg received fresh snowfall, raising hopes for a bustling holiday season during Christmas and New Year celebrations. The snow is expected to attract large numbers of tourists, reviving winter tourism in the Valley’s hill stations.
The heavy snowfall is also crucial for replenishing perennial water reservoirs in Jammu and Kashmir’s higher reaches. These reservoirs feed rivers, streams, springs, and lakes, sustaining water supplies during the hot summer months.
Jammu & Kashmir temperature update

Jammu: 11.5°C
Katra: 11.6°C

Authorities urged travellers to exercise caution and avoid non-essential travel.
