Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal cast his vote in the Delhi Assembly elections on Wednesday, urging voters to exercise their franchise.
Speaking to reporters, Sibal said, "The message is quite simple, that every citizen of this country should come and vote. Because if you live in a community, you must participate to ensure that the person or the party you are voting for serves the community. If you don't vote, you can't then blame the government. This is the duty of every citizen to exercise their franchise."
He also commented on a statement he had heard, adding, "I heard someone say - Vote for Viksit Bharat. I think India will be Viksit only when it is educated. India is not even educated right now. It is not right for an officer to say this because, at this time, this amounts to campaigning...Until the EC itself takes measures, the purity that should be there in our politics will remain blemished. So, this is not good for democracy."
After a slow start in the first two hours, voter turnout in the single-phase Delhi Assembly elections reached 19.95% by 11 AM and further increased to 33.31% by 1 PM, according to the Election Commission of India (ECI).
Among the districts, North East Delhi recorded the highest turnout of 24.87% till 11 AM, followed by Shahdara at 23.30%, while Central Delhi registered the lowest at 16.46%. Other districts reported turnout figures as follows: South West (21.90%), New Delhi (16.80%), East (20.03%), North (18.63%), North West (19.75%), South (19.75%), South East (19.66%), and West (17.67%).
