Eminent Hindi writer and Jnanpith Award recipient Vinod Kumar Shukla passed away at the age of 89, his family confirmed, marking the end of an era

Chattisgarh: Renowned Hindi litterateur and Jnanpith Award winner Vinod Kumar Shukla died on Tuesday at the age of 89. The veteran writer, a towering figure in contemporary Hindi literature, was undergoing treatment at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Raipur, following a prolonged illness.
Shukla had earlier been admitted to the Critical Care Unit of AIIMS Raipur in a serious condition. According to the medical bulletin issued by the hospital, he was suffering from a severe respiratory illness and was a known case of interstitial lung disease (ILD). His condition was further complicated by multiple co-morbidities, including type-2 diabetes mellitus and hypertension.

Doctors had stated that Shukla was being treated for severe pneumonia, accompanied by pleural effusion and systemic infection. He was also receiving treatment for oral candidiasis. At the time of hospitalisation, he was on advanced life-support measures, including mechanical ventilation, and was being administered multiple inotropic drugs to maintain blood pressure.
Born in Chhattisgarh, Vinod Kumar Shukla was widely regarded as one of the most original voices in Hindi prose and poetry. His understated yet deeply evocative writing style earned him critical acclaim and a devoted readership. Over the decades, his literary contributions reshaped modern Hindi narrative forms, particularly through novels, short stories and poetry rooted in everyday life.
In recognition of his outstanding contribution to Indian literature, Shukla was awarded the Jnanpith Award, the country’s highest literary honour. His death has been widely mourned across literary circles, with writers and scholars remembering him as a gentle yet powerful chronicler of human experience.
More tributes are expected to follow as the literary community pays homage to one of Hindi literature’s most respected and influential figures.
