Srinagar: Security forces in Jammu and Kashmir foiled a major infiltration attempt along the Line of Control (LoC) in the Keran sector of Kupwara district on Sunday, intercepting terrorists attempting to cross over from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

According to defence sources, a fierce gunbattle broke out after troops challenged the infiltrators. Two terrorists are believed to have been killed, although their bodies have yet to be retrieved due to intense firing and rugged terrain. The operation remains ongoing, with additional forces deployed to seal off potential escape routes in the dense and mountainous region.

The Keran sector, known for being highly sensitive and frequently targeted for cross-border infiltration, has been under heightened surveillance. Officials note that such infiltration attempts tend to increase ahead of winter, when snow blocks many traditional routes.

In a separate counter-insurgency operation, an encounter erupted in the Keshwan forest area of Kishtwar district, where the Army launched an intelligence-led search operation around 1pm.
