The Dumri Assembly constituency in Jharkhand is gearing up for a high-stakes electoral battle as voting takes place on Wednesday. With 373 polling booths set up, the state Chief Electoral Officer has announced that the counting of votes will occur on November 23. The constituency has witnessed intense campaigning, with major parties vying for dominance.
Key candidates
The Dumri constituency for the 2024 Jharkhand Assembly elections features a diverse lineup of candidates. Indrajeet Kumar Jaiswal is contesting for the BJP, while former minister Jagarnath Mahto’s wife Bebi Devi represents the JMM. Other candidates include Mohan Lal Saw (LAP), Bijay Kumar Mahto (RJSP), and Yashoda Devi (AJSU). Rakib Alam is contesting for the AVP, Jairam Kumar Mahato for JLKM, and Abdul Mobin Rizvi for RJM. Hari Prasad Mahto represents the SP, and independents include Shivshankar Mahto, Mansur Ansari, Baijnath Mahto, and Roshan Lal Turi.
Election dynamics
It may be noted that Yashoda Devi had contested from Dumri in 2019 but lost to JMM's Jagarnath Mahto. Dumri witnessed a 71.2% voter turnout in the 2019 elections, reflecting strong public engagement. The late Jagarnath Mahto had won the seat in 2019 and 2014, securing 71,128 and 77,984 votes, respectively. Following Mahto's death in April 2023, his wife Bebi Devi won the seat in a by-election. The 2023 by-election saw Bebi Devi of JMM securing a victory with 100,317 votes against Yashoda Devi, who garnered 83,164 votes.
The upcoming contest is crucial not just for local stakeholders but also for shaping the larger narrative of Jharkhand's political landscape. Dumri has been a JMM stronghold, but the BJP and AJSU have consistently posed significant challenges, making this year's contest unpredictable.
Shah’s rally in Dumri
Union Home Minister Amit Shah, addressing a rally in Dumri's Giridih district, sharply criticised Chief Minister Hemant Soren’s administration. Shah accused Soren’s government of corruption and facilitating land-grabbing practices against tribal communities. He assured voters of legislative measures to return land to tribals and pledged to deport alleged infiltrators in the state.
Shah also claimed the BJP would eliminate the need for youth migration by establishing industries within Jharkhand. He further accused the Congress of attempting to erode reservations for OBCs, reaffirming that such measures would be staunchly opposed under BJP rule.
