A proposal to install a statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in Israel has gained momentum, with Israeli officials describing the initiative as a tribute to the Maratha ruler’s enduring legacy and a symbol of the growing relationship between India and Israel.

The proposal was discussed during a meeting between Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Israel’s Consul General in Mumbai, Yaniv Revach.

The diplomat sought the Maharashtra government’s support for what he described as a long-term cultural project aimed at strengthening people-to-people ties between the two countries.

According to Revach, the idea is not limited to erecting a statue. Israeli authorities are also exploring ways to introduce Shivaji Maharaj’s history and contributions to a wider audience in Israel.

Plans under consideration include translating literature on the Maratha king into Hebrew so that Israeli citizens can learn more about his life, leadership and achievements.

Speaking about the initiative, Revach said the project reflects Israel’s recognition of Shivaji Maharaj’s importance in Indian history.

He noted that the Maratha ruler continues to be admired for his courage, administrative vision, military strategy and commitment to protecting his people.

The Israeli diplomat said discussions are underway with several municipalities regarding the location of the proposed memorial.

Authorities are also looking to engage a reputed artist to design the statue, ensuring that it accurately reflects the historical significance of the warrior king.

Revach explained that after taking charge in Mumbai, he spent time studying the history of the Maratha Empire and the role played by Shivaji Maharaj in shaping the region.

He said he came to appreciate the ruler not only as the founder of the Maratha Empire but also as a leader whose ideals of good governance, religious harmony, maritime strength and public welfare remain relevant even today.

During the meeting, the Consul General requested assistance from the Maharashtra government in areas such as historical references, design guidance and artistic consultation.

He expressed confidence that collaboration between Israeli authorities and Maharashtra would help ensure the project is executed with authenticity and respect.

Revach also highlighted the historical links between Maharashtra and the Jewish community in India.

He said many members of the Indian Jewish diaspora and their descendants continue to contribute significantly to Israeli society, making the proposed memorial even more meaningful.

According to him, the statue could eventually evolve into a broader cultural initiative involving citizens from both countries.

He suggested that such efforts would help foster a deeper understanding of each other’s histories and traditions while strengthening bilateral ties.

The proposal comes as India and Israel continue to expand cooperation across multiple sectors, including technology, agriculture, defence and culture.

If realised, the Shivaji Maharaj statue would stand as a lasting symbol of friendship between the two nations and a tribute to one of India’s most revered historical figures.
