New Delhi: A new NCERT module for schoolchildren on Partition Horrors Remembrance Day has named Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the Congress and Lord Mountbatten as the three culprits behind India’s Partition.

The module explains that Jinnah demanded partition, the Congress accepted it, and Mountbatten implemented it. This reference appears under the subhead Culprits of the Partition. It also includes a portion of a speech delivered by Jawaharlal Nehru in 1947. The chapter notes that Nehru said: “We have come to a stage when we must either accept division or face continued conflict and chaos. Partition is bad. But whatever the price of unity, the price of civil war would be infinitely greater.”

In the introduction to the special module, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s words have been included: “Partition’s pains can never be forgotten. Millions of our sisters and brothers were displaced and many lost their lives due to mindless hate and violence. In memory of the struggles and sacrifices of our people, 14th August will be observed as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day.”

This special module is not part of the regular textbook. It has been designed for students from Class 6 to 8. NCERT has also prepared another special module for students from Class 9 to 12.
