India`s K-6 hypersonic missile, with MIRV & Mach 7.5 speed, surpasses BrahMos.

New Delhi: India is on the verge of a major leap in strategic firepower with the development of its most powerful missile to date, the K-6 submarine-launched hypersonic ballistic missile. Designed to strike targets at blistering speeds and extended ranges, this next-generation weapon is being built by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and is poised to surpass even the legendary BrahMos cruise missile in terms of speed, reach, and destruction potential.
This next-generation Submarine-Launched Ballistic Missile (SLBM) is tailor-made for deployment on the upcoming S-5 class nuclear submarines, which will be larger and more advanced than the current Arihant-class vessels.
What sets the K-6 apart from earlier systems?
It is its hypersonic speed, capable of reaching Mach 7.5, approximately 9,261 km/h, allowing it to evade most known missile defence systems. It’s designed to carry Multiple Independently Targetable Reentry Vehicles (MIRVs), enabling a single missile to strike multiple targets with precision. This MIRV capability makes the K-6 a powerful tool for area denial and strategic deterrence.
With an operational range of up to 8,000 kilometers, the K-6 places vast regions, including high-value strategic and economic centers, well within its reach. Military experts see this as a force multiplier, especially given rising regional tensions and increasing Chinese naval assertiveness in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).
In addition to nuclear payloads, the missile is reportedly capable of carrying conventional warheads, offering operational flexibility across a spectrum of combat scenarios.
When operational, the K-6 will join India’s growing family of SLBMs that includes the K-4 and K-5, both already inducted into service. However, unlike its predecessors, the K-6’s hypersonic and MIRV capabilities elevate it to a new strategic tier, aligning India with elite global military powers like the United States, Russia, China, France, and the United Kingdom.
Beyond its technical prowess, the K-6 represents a clear message: India is not only strengthening its nuclear triad but also asserting a proactive posture in safeguarding national interests amid evolving security challenges in the Indo-Pacific.
As sea trials approach, defense analysts are watching closely, the K-6 isn’t just another missile. It’s a superweapon in the making, one that could reshape the balance of power beneath the waves.
