New Delhi: Indian Railways is set to implement airport-style luggage regulations across major stations, starting with the Prayagraj division, according to media reports. The new system will see passengers' baggage weighed and checked before they are allowed onto platforms, with penalties for those exceeding permitted limits.

Trial begins in Prayagraj division

The North Central Railway will roll out this initiative at key stations in the Prayagraj division. These include Prayagraj Junction, Prayagraj Chheoki, Subedarganj, Kanpur Central, Mirzapur, Tundla, Aligarh Junction, Govindpuri, and Etawah. Electronic weighing machines will be installed at these stations to facilitate the process.

Much like at airports, passengers will be required to weigh their luggage before boarding. Not only will weight be monitored, but baggage dimensions will also be scrutinised. Oversized bags that occupy excessive space within train coaches may attract penalties, even if they fall within the weight allowance.

How much luggage is allowed?

Indian Railways has outlined specific luggage limits for each travel class:

First AC: Up to 70 kg

Second AC: Up to 50 kg

Third AC: Up to 40 kg

Sleeper Class: Up to 40 kg

General/Second Sitting: Up to 35 kg

Passengers are allowed an additional 10 kg above these limits without prior booking. However, exceeding this buffer will require the baggage to be officially booked at the station’s luggage counter.

Fine for exceeding limit?

If a passenger is found with luggage beyond the booking limit, they will have to pay a penalty. This fine will be 1.5 times higher than the normal luggage rate. So, carrying extra baggage without booking can become costly.

Railway officials have stated that the policy aims to improve passenger experience and safety. Overloaded coaches due to excessive and unwieldy baggage often lead to discomfort and hazards during travel, especially during peak holiday seasons.

By introducing stricter luggage controls, Indian Railways hopes to streamline boarding processes, reduce congestion, and create a more comfortable journey for all passengers.
