An Indian-origin woman from Gujarat was shot dead during a suspected robbery attempt at a supermarket in Virginia, United States, in a chilling incident captured entirely on CCTV footage.

Police have launched an investigation and formed special teams to track down and arrest the unidentified attacker.

The victim has been identified as 45-year-old Meghnaben Patel, a native of Jantral village in Gujarat’s Mehsana district.

She had reportedly been working at the supermarket in Virginia for the past 10 years. The tragic incident has left her family in shock both in India and the United States.

According to details shared by family members and reports from local authorities, the incident took place at the supermarket where Meghnaben was on duty.

CCTV footage from the store reportedly shows a man wearing animal-print track pants and a grey jacket entering the nearly empty establishment with his face covered.

The suspect is seen approaching the counter and engaging in a brief conversation with Meghnaben.

Moments later, he allegedly reaches into his pocket, pulls out a firearm and opens fire at close range. Meghnaben immediately collapses after being hit.

The disturbing footage further shows the attacker sliding or jumping over the counter and firing additional shots before knocking some items to the floor and fleeing the scene.

No visible robbery or theft was seen taking place before the suspect escaped.

Following the incident, local police rushed to the spot, cordoned off the area and initiated an investigation.

Authorities have also deployed special teams to identify and apprehend the suspect.

Meghnaben is survived by her husband, Upendrabhai Patel, and their two children, daughter Nakshiben and son Smith, who live in the United States. Her parents, Karsanbhai Patel and Kapilaben, continue to reside in Jantral village, where news of her death has left relatives and residents devastated.

Investigators are continuing to examine all possible angles surrounding the fatal shooting.
