Delhi: India has emerged as one of the countries with a significant number of vessels successfully navigating the Strait of Hormuz, even as global supply chains face disruptions due to the continuing blockade in the region. Since the outbreak of conflict on February 28, at least eight Indian ships have crossed this crucial maritime corridor.

Key LPG carriers transit conflict zone

Among the vessels that have safely passed through the strait are two LPG carriers, BW TYR and BW ELM. Together, these ships transported approximately 94,000 tonnes of liquefied petroleum gas while navigating the conflict-affected waters.

Strategic route under pressure

Shipping activity in the Strait of Hormuz has become a major concern following military actions by the United States and Israel on Iran, and the subsequent response from Tehran. The escalation has effectively disrupted movement through the narrow waterway, which serves as a vital channel for oil and gas exports from Gulf nations to the rest of the world.

Despite the tensions, Iran has indicated that vessels deemed “non-hostile” may still be allowed to pass, provided they coordinate with Iranian authorities.

Indian-flagged tankers continue operations

Four Indian-flagged LPG tankers have managed to complete their journeys through the strait without incident. Between March 26 and 28, Pine Gas and Jag Vasant delivered a combined cargo of 92,612 tonnes of LPG to India.

Earlier in the month, MT Shivalik and MT Nanda Devi, carrying around 92,712 tonnes of LPG, had already reached Indian ports. Shivalik arrived at Mundra port in Gujarat on March 16, while Nanda Devi docked at Kandla port on March 17, according to reports.

Oil and fuel shipments also reach safely

In addition to LPG carriers, other Indian vessels have also completed their journeys. The Indian-flagged oil tanker Jag Laadki transported 80,886 tonnes of crude oil from the United Arab Emirates to Mundra, arriving on March 18.

Another vessel, Jag Prakash, which was carrying gasoline from Oman to Africa, had earlier crossed the strait without any issues.

List of vessels that crossed the strait

The following ships are among those that have successfully navigated the Strait of Hormuz during the period of heightened tensions:

  • Shivalik
  • Nanda Devi
  • Jag Laadki
  • Pine Gas
  • Jag Vasant
  • BW Tyr
  • BW Elm
  • Green Sanvi

Initial presence in the strait

At the time when the conflict in the Middle East escalated, there were 28 Indian-flagged vessels present in the Strait of Hormuz. Of these, 24 were positioned on the western side of the strait, while four were located on the eastern side.

Ongoing concerns over global supply chains

The continued instability in the region has raised concerns about global energy supplies, given the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz. As one of the busiest shipping routes in the world, any disruption in this corridor has immediate implications for oil and gas availability across multiple countries.
