New Delhi: Former Chief of Army Staff General Manoj Naravane (Retd) on Saturday emphasised India’s long-standing commitment to fostering positive relations with its neighbouring countries, stating that regional stability and prosperity are deeply interconnected.

Speaking in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, Naravane said India refrains from commenting on the internal matters of other nations and instead focuses on constructive engagement. Referring to political narratives, he cautioned against misinformation often spread through rhetoric.

“India has always tried to maintain good relations with other nations... We don't comment on others' situations... People say a lot of things in politics, which are not true... The future of India and its neighbouring countries is interlinked, and we all need and want to maintain good relations with them,” Naravane said.

His remarks come amid heightened unrest in Bangladesh following the death of student leader Sharif Osman Hadi. Hadi, the convenor of Inqilab Moncho and a parliamentary candidate for the February 2026 national elections, died on December 18, 2025, in Singapore while undergoing treatment for gunshot injuries sustained during an attack in Dhaka.

Hadi was shot at close range on December 12 while travelling by rickshaw in the Bijoynagar area of the capital. According to police, two assailants arrived on a motorcycle, opened fire and fled the scene. The funeral prayer service for Hadi concluded in Bangladesh on Saturday and drew a large crowd. In line with the family’s wishes, he was buried beside the grave of national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam.

Separately, Bangladeshi authorities have arrested ten people in connection with the killing of Dipu Chandra Das, a 27-year-old Hindu youth, in Mymensingh. Das was allegedly beaten to death by a mob over accusations of blasphemy, and his body was later set on fire, triggering widespread outrage.

Chief Adviser of Bangladesh’s interim government, Muhammad Yunus, confirmed the arrests in a post on X, stating that law enforcement agencies had taken ten individuals into custody in the case. He said seven suspects were arrested by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), while three were apprehended by the police during operations carried out at multiple locations.

Those arrested by RAB were identified as Md. Limon Sarkar (19), Md. Tarek Hossain (19), Md. Manik Mia (20), Ershad Ali (39), Nijum Uddin (20), Alomgir Hossain (38) and Md. Miraj Hossain Akon (46). The police arrested Md. Azmol Hasan Sagir (26), Md. Shahin Mia (19) and Md. Nazmul.

The incidents have intensified concerns over political violence and communal tensions in Bangladesh, even as India continues to stress dialogue, stability and cooperative ties in the region.
