New Delhi: When constable Taufiq Ahmad approached Advocate Aruna Singh to fight a legal battle for his reinstatement, he had no idea she was the daughter of the very man who had ordered his dismissal — then Inspector General (IG) Rakesh Singh.

Taufiq had been removed from service by the Uttar Pradesh Police following his arrest in a POCSO case. But that did not stop Aruna Singh from taking up the case and arguing it before the Allahabad High Court, even though it involved overturning a decision taken by her own father.

Ultimately, Aruna secured a legal victory and Taufiq was reinstated into the police force — thanks to the daughter of the IG who had once shown him the door.

Wrongfully accused, legally redeemed

The incident traces back to January 2023, when Taufiq was arrested over allegations of molesting the 17-year-old daughter of a BSF jawan on a train. The case triggered immediate disciplinary action. After an internal inquiry, then IG Rakesh Singh, who later retired, ordered Taufiq’s dismissal from service.

Although a trial court later acquitted Taufiq, citing flaws in the investigation, the police department remained unwilling to reinstate him.

Justice above blood ties

It was at this point that Taufiq sought legal help — unaware that his advocate Aruna Singh was the IG’s daughter. Putting professional duty above personal ties, Aruna fought the case with full commitment.

The High Court quashed both the internal inquiry report and the disciplinary action, ruling them unjustified. It was a striking example of professional integrity triumphing over family allegiance.

“I owe my job to Advocate Aruna,” said Taufiq, acknowledging that her sense of justice mattered more than her father’s legacy.
