The Himachal Pradesh government has decided to scrap its preliminary investigation into a controversial incident involving a bus driver and conductor after a video critical of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was played by a passenger. The move comes after a backlash from the opposition and widespread criticism of the state’s handling of the matter.
The incident occurred on November 5 aboard a bus traveling between Dhalli and Sanjauli, when a passenger played a video clip that allegedly defamed Rahul Gandhi. Following the incident, a formal complaint was filed with the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), prompting the Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) to launch an investigation. As part of the inquiry, notices were issued to the bus driver and conductor, asking them to provide explanations for the incident within three days.
The state government’s decision to investigate the bus staff drew sharp criticism, particularly from the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The BJP accused the Congress-led state government of misusing its power to suppress criticism of its leaders. BJP National Spokesperson Shehzad Jai Hind expressed his outrage on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), questioning the government’s priorities. He wrote, “Congress Emergency Mindset… A passenger played a video on a bus, and shockingly, the conductor and driver were sent notices because it was critical of Rahul Gandhi! Since when are they responsible for what passengers hear? Is this the priority of Himachal Govt after samosa investigations? Where is democracy and constitution here??”
Amid growing criticism, the Himachal Pradesh government has now decided to scrap the preliminary probe, and no action will be taken against the bus driver and conductor. The decision to end the investigation reflects a shift in the state government’s stance following the intense backlash from political opponents and civil rights advocates.
The controversy has sparked a wider debate about the limits of government authority and freedom of expression, with critics warning against the potential misuse of power to target individuals or incidents based on political content. (With inputs from Agencies)
