Chennai: The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has issued a forecast for heavy rainfall across the coastal districts of Tamil Nadu until November 8. This is due to a cyclonic circulation over the southeast Bay of Bengal, which is extending to the southern parts of the state.

Over the next two days, the districts of Tenkasi, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, and Kanyakumari are expected to experience heavy rain.
Recent rainfall has caused the water levels in the Vaigai Dam to rise steadily. Experts are keeping a close watch as the inflow of water from the Mullaperiyar River continues to increase. Over the past three days, the dam’s water level has reached 64.34 feet, approaching the full capacity of 71 feet.
Flood warnings issued for Vaigai Dam
The Tamil Nadu Water Resources Department has announced a series of flood warnings. A first warning will be issued when the water level reaches 66 feet, a second warning at 68.5 feet, and a third warning at 69 feet. If necessary, water from the Vaigai Dam will be released for irrigation in Madurai district.
The Vaigai Dam is an important water source for several districts, including Theni, Dindigul, Madurai, Sivaganga, and Ramanathapuram. The rising water levels are a positive sign for farmers in these areas. Manikantan Thevar, a farmer from Madurai, said: "The increase in Vaigai’s water level gives us hope, as the water release for irrigation will benefit our paddy cultivation."
Water levels in the Varaha River are also rising. This is due to excess water from the Mullaperiyar Dam flowing into smaller reservoirs, which have now reached full capacity.
Authorities have advised the public to stay away from riverbanks and avoid bathing in areas like the Kumbakkarai Waterfalls, due to the continuous rainfall and the risk of flooding. With the northeast monsoon season starting on October 17, many parts of Tamil Nadu have been experiencing heavy rain, leading to overflowing water bodies.
