Haryana police block over 500 social media links amid crackdown on misleading content and apps

Chandigarh: Haryana Police have reported a total of 1,018 objectionable links and profiles under an ongoing campaign targeting illegal and misleading content on social media. Of these, 583 have already been removed or blocked.
The campaign, launched in collaboration with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), aims to curb anti-national, anti-religion, and misleading posts that could incite tension or confusion.
Continuous monitoring to tackle misinformation
"Objectionable, anti-national, anti-religion and misleading content inciting tension and confusion was being frequently posted on social media, making a well-coordinated action necessary. With this objective, the Cyber Haryana team started continuous monitoring of social media platforms about a month ago, and the drive is still ongoing," the police said.
"Under this campaign, a total of 1,018 objectionable links and profiles have been reported so far, out of which 583 have already been removed or blocked by social media companies. The remaining 435 are in various stages of review and will be taken down soon," it added.
The cyber team is actively identifying posts, videos, links, and profiles containing misinformation, provocative language, or material that could disturb public peace.
Legal action and strict enforcement
"As soon as such content is detected, a notice is issued to the concerned social media platform under Section 79(3)(b) of the IT Act, directing immediate removal. No leniency is being shown at any stage of this process," the statement said.
Haryana Director General of Police Ajay Singhal highlighted the rise in digital fraud cases, prompting a separate campaign to monitor suspicious trading and investment apps.
Crackdown on fake investment apps
Launched on 12 January, the special drive has so far identified 28 suspicious apps and channels across the country. Fourteen have already been removed from digital platforms, while the remaining 14 are under final review for takedown.
Singhal emphasised that the police remain uncompromising against those spreading false or inflammatory information on social media. He urged the public to report any suspicious post, link, or app immediately to the police or cyber helpline for timely action.
Additional DGP Cyber Shibash Kabiraj said the campaign’s primary goal is to create a safe, aware, and reliable digital environment, ensuring social media is used responsibly.
