The Army, in a post on X, said around 65 cabins were stranded and confirmed that swift and coordinated rescue efforts were carried out with support from the Chinar Corps

Srinagar: About 300 tourists were left stranded on Monday after a technical malfunction disrupted operations of the Gulmarg Gondola cable car system at a resort in Gulmarg, officials said.
The incident led to the suspension of both phases of the popular cable car service, with no casualties reported.
Rescue operations were immediately launched, with personnel from the State Disaster Response Force, National Disaster Response Force, police, and the army working jointly to evacuate passengers from the stranded cabins. Officials confirmed that all tourists were safely brought down.
Restoration work on the cable car system is currently underway, authorities added.
Omar Abdullah said the situation was being closely monitored by the government and reassured that there was no cause for panic. He added that all cabins remained intact and coordinated rescue efforts were progressing smoothly.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha also reviewed the situation, directing the Director General of Police to reach the site and supervise the operation. He said joint teams were working to ensure the safe evacuation of all passengers.
The Army, in a post on X, said around 65 cabins were stranded and confirmed that swift and coordinated rescue efforts were carried out with support from the Chinar Corps.
The Gulmarg Gondola, one of the highest cable cars in the world, has faced previous safety-related disruptions, including a 2017 incident in which seven people were killed when a tree struck a cabin during strong winds. The service was also temporarily suspended in early 2025 due to technical issues.
