India cracks down on 25 OTT platforms including ULLU and ALTT for streaming obscene and indecent content, invoking multiple cyber and media laws

New Delhi: In a major move to enforce digital content standards, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) has ordered the blocking of 25 OTT platforms and apps, including popular names like ULLU, ALTT, Big Shots App, and Desiflix.
The decision comes after these platforms were found promoting sexually explicit and objectionable content in violation of Indian cyber laws and media regulations.
What laws were violated?
The crackdown was carried out under:
- Section 67 & 67A of the IT Act, 2000 – prohibits transmission of obscene or sexually explicit content.
- Section 294 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 – penalises obscene acts and songs.
- Section 4 of the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986 – restricts portrayal of women in indecent forms.
- Section 79(3)(b) of the IT Act – removes intermediary protection if unlawful content is not taken down post notification.
What happens now?
All Internet Service Providers (ISPs) across the country have been directed to block access to these OTT apps and websites. These platforms were reportedly airing inappropriate ads and adult content in violation of multiple provisions.
Complete list of banned platforms includes:
ULLU, ALTT, Big Shots App, Jalva App, Wow Entertainment, Look Entertainment, Hitprime, Feneo, ShowX, Sol Talkies, Kangan App, Bull App, Adda TV, HotX VIP, Desiflix, Boomex, Navarasa Lite, Gulab App, Fugi, Mojflix, Hulchul App, MoodX, NeonX VIP, Triflicks.
Why now?
The action comes as part of a broader government effort to regulate digital content and ensure that streaming platforms are safe for all audiences, especially minors. The move also sends a signal to intermediaries like app stores and platforms that non-compliance with Indian content laws will result in serious consequences.
