Hyderabad: Global tech major Google on Monday announced a USD 15 billion investment over the next five years to establish an artificial intelligence (AI) hub in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, marking its largest project outside the United States.

The hub, being developed in partnership with the Adani Group, will also house India’s biggest data centre campus.

The announcement was made during Bharat AI Shakti, a Google-hosted event in New Delhi that saw the presence of Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu.

“It’s the largest AI hub that we are going to be investing in anywhere in the world outside of the US,” said Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian, while signing the formal agreement.

The 1-gigawatt AI data centre will be supported by new large-scale clean energy infrastructure, a subsea cable system, and an expanded fibre-optic network, Google said in a statement.

The project aims to enable AI-driven innovation, digital infrastructure growth, and high-compute workloads across India.

In a post on X, Google CEO Sundar Pichai called the Visakhapatnam AI hub a “landmark development,” adding that it will “bring our industry-leading technology to enterprises and users in India, accelerating AI innovation and driving growth across the country.”

Google’s investment — spanning 2026 to 2030 — includes the development of gigawatt-scale data operations, renewable energy projects, and network connectivity. The initiative will be executed in collaboration with partners, including AdaniConneX (a joint venture between Adani Enterprises and EdgeConneX) and Airtel.

“The Adani Group is proud to partner with Google on this historic project that will define the future of India’s digital landscape,” said Gautam Adani, Chairman of the Adani Group. “This is more than an investment in infrastructure. It is an investment in the soul of a rising nation.”

Adani Enterprises confirmed that its subsidiary AdaniConneX and Google will co-develop the AI data centre campus, alongside new green energy infrastructure and transmission lines in Andhra Pradesh.

According to a Google-commissioned analysis, the AI hub is projected to generate USD 15 billion in additional US GDP over the five years, driven by increased AI and cloud adoption and by US-linked economic activity tied to the project’s development.

Finance Minister Sitharaman lauded the initiative, crediting policy continuity under the Modi government for enabling large-scale digital investments.

She also praised Chief Minister Naidu, saying he had previously “shown what he can do to scale up digital infrastructure.”

“It is just the right place to land in and the right country to be in,” Sitharaman said. “This is one of those phases in Indian history where policy is pushing ahead much before many political players are ready to absorb it.”
