The US Agency for International Development (USAID), the world’s largest humanitarian aid agency, has found itself in the midst of a political storm. Recent reports have revealed that the US government’s funding has not only been used for humanitarian work but also to influence politics in various countries, including India. From supporting George Soros’ political initiatives to funding a transgender clinic in India, the agency is facing growing scrutiny.
One of the most recent controversies involves Hungarian-American billionaire George Soros. According to claims shared by a post on X (formerly Twitter), Soros allegedly received a staggering $260 million from USAID to destabilise governments across the world, including in India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and the US. The post, linked to US President Donald Trump, claimed that Soros used this money to spread chaos, change governments, and further his personal interests.
Over the past 15 years, reports suggest that USAID has granted over $270 million to organisations connected to Soros. One such organisation, the East-West Management Institute, which partners with Soros’ Open Society Foundations, has reportedly benefited from USAID funding. This has raised concerns about the role of the US government in international politics and whether these funds are being used to influence foreign governments, including India.
In India, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has long accused Soros of supporting opposition groups and funding critics of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. These accusations have only fuelled the suspicion that Soros’ activities may be aimed at destabilising the Indian government and interfering in its politics.
USAID and the transgender clinic
Along with its involvement in political matters, USAID has also been criticised for funding a transgender clinic in India. US Senator John Kennedy recently brought attention to this issue, claiming that American taxpayers' money was used to support the clinic. This discovery, made public by conservative commentator Gunther Eagleman, raised further questions about the agency's spending priorities.
Senator Kennedy’s remarks reflect a broader critique of USAID’s initiatives, particularly those that support gender-sensitive causes. He suggested that while some of USAID’s projects are valuable, funding for a transgender clinic in India was a waste of taxpayer money. Musk, the CEO of Tesla and a supporter of former President Trump, echoed Kennedy’s sentiments, agreeing with the claim that USAID’s financial decisions were questionable.
Trump’s crackdown on USAID
These developments come as part of a broader crackdown on USAID by the Trump administration. The administration has been vocal about its concerns over the agency’s funding of what it describes as “woke” projects. Trump himself called for the shutdown of USAID, arguing that its funds should be better allocated to avoid wasteful spending.
The Trump administration has taken a firm stance against gender-sensitive initiatives, such as the removal of anti-discrimination protections and restrictions on race and gender courses in schools. Musk, an outspoken critic of USAID, even labelled the agency a "criminal organisation," further highlighting the tensions over the use of American taxpayer money.
A global debate
Despite these criticisms, USAID continues to be one of the largest humanitarian arms of the US government, with an annual budget of billions of dollars. The agency operates across the globe, funding a wide range of projects, from education to climate change. However, the controversy surrounding its involvement in political matters and gender-sensitive initiatives has led to increased scrutiny.
