She emphasized her continued public service and said her next move is up to the BJP

New Delhi: Former Union Minister and BJP leader Smriti Irani has firmly denied any plans for political retirement, suggesting her comeback could be "earlier-than-expected." Irani, who recently lost the 2024 Lok Sabha election from Amethi, also discussed her return to television after over a decade, reprising her iconic role as Tulsi Virani in "Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi 2."
Dismissing retirement speculation, the 49-year-old in an exclusive interview with Aaj Tak, stated, "Why talk about 2029? Who knows what BJP will say in 2029? Why not 2026 or even 2025?" She emphasised her continued active engagement in public life, highlighting her past roles as a three-time MP and minister in five departments, adding, "Who retires at 49... people are just starting their careers." Irani asserted that her next political move is for the BJP to decide, but she has already proven her competence in Parliament.
Regarding her Amethi loss, Irani pointed out that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi chose not to contest from the constituency this time, stating, "In 2024, the Gandhi family refused to face me. I can't chase after them." She referenced historical instances of major leaders losing from Amethi, including Sharad Yadav and Menaka Gandhi, suggesting the Gandhis chose the seat due to "favourable social equations." Irani maintained that her defeat would have been more painful had she not diligently worked at the grassroots level in Amethi between 2014 and 2019, citing achievements like building one lakh homes and setting up a medical college. She noted her broad perspective on life, seeing both politics and media as platforms to address societal issues.
In a move that delighted her fans, Irani is making her acting comeback as Tulsi Virani in the second season of "Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi," set to feature the original cast after 25 years. The release date is yet to be disclosed, but her first look as Tulsi recently leaked, sparking nostalgia. When asked about her return to acting, Irani candidly stated, "Because I wanted to." She reminisced about the show's revolutionary impact on television, noting its role in empowering women producers and central female characters. Irani expressed excitement about reconnecting with her audience, acknowledging the evolution of the medium while affirming her lasting bond as "Tulsi for eight years."
Addressing her often "aggressive demeanour" in politics, Irani explained that it arises when her beliefs are challenged, citing her strong defence of President Droupadi Murmu against derogatory remarks in Parliament. She concluded by reiterating her motivation for entering politics: to address societal issues and leverage any platform to make a meaningful impact.
