A day after Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin met Foxconn’s new India head, the electronics giant denied discussing any fresh investment plans — contradicting the state’s claim that a ₹15,000-crore project was on the table.

Chennai: Taiwan-based electronics major Hon Hai Technology Group (Foxconn) on Tuesday denied that any new investment proposal was discussed during its recent meeting with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, even as the state government maintained that a large-scale investment plan was indeed on the table.
The clarification came a day after Foxconn’s newly appointed India representative, Robert Wu met Stalin and senior officials in Chennai. Following the meeting, Stalin posted on X, thanking the company “for choosing Tamil Nadu and shaping the future with us.”
However, in response to a query from The Times of India, Foxconn stated: “Foxconn's newly appointed India representative Robert Wu had an exchange with the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister’s office and his team. During the meeting, no new investments were discussed.”
The Tamil Nadu Industries Department, in turn, stood by its statement that discussions regarding a ₹15,000-crore investment had indeed taken place.
A senior official said the confusion might stem from interpretation, explaining that “Foxconn may not see it as a ‘new’ investment, but this is the first time we are announcing it.”
The disagreement appears to hinge on terminology — whether the investment is to be viewed as an entirely new proposal or an extension of an ongoing project already approved by the state cabinet.
In May, Foxconn had announced a $1.5 billion (around ₹13,000 crore) infusion into its Indian subsidiary Yuzhan Technologies to manufacture display modules at its upcoming facility near Chennai, a project that received Tamil Nadu cabinet clearance in October last year.
