A four-year-old boy accidentally fell into a 220-foot-deep open borewell in Haryana's Ambala district on Tuesday morning, triggering a large-scale rescue operation involving multiple emergency agencies.

The incident took place in Dhanaura village in the Barara area at around 6.30 am.

According to officials, the child, identified as Nirbhay, had accompanied his father, Manjit, to their agricultural field to deliver breakfast to his grandfather, Karnail Singh, who was already working there.

While the adults were occupied in the field, Nirbhay wandered off to play. He reportedly noticed an uncovered borewell and began tossing clumps of soil into it.

Officials believe the damp ground surrounding the narrow opening gave way as the child leaned over, causing him to lose his balance and plunge into the approximately 220-foot-deep borewell, which has a diameter of about nine inches.

The family rushed to the spot after hearing a loud sound and immediately called out to the child.

Nirbhay's father, grandfather and local villagers made initial attempts to pull him out, but were unsuccessful. They then informed the authorities around 7.30 am.

Senior district officials, including Deputy Commissioner Ajay Singh Tomar, reached the site soon after being alerted.

Rescue teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and the Army have since launched an extensive operation using specialised equipment to reach the child safely.

Officials said the rescue mission is continuing, with every effort being made to bring Nirbhay out of the borewell safely.
