Srinagar: Gulchain Singh Charak, a senior political figure and former minister from Jammu, passed away on Friday at the age of 83 after battling a prolonged illness. Charak was known for his long-standing association with the Congress and served as a cabinet minister in the PDP–Congress government under Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad between 2005 and 2008.

Apart from his political contributions, Charak was the president of Dogra Sadar Sabha and the founder of a chain of Dogra educational institutions. He had also served as AICC(I) in-charge for Punjab and Bihar. His commitment to public service and efforts toward the development of Jammu and the preservation of Dogra heritage were widely acknowledged.

Leaders across political lines expressed grief over his passing. Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh extended condolences on X, while former Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad remembered Charak as a dedicated and upright leader. Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh Kavinder Gupta and National Conference leaders Dr Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah also mourned his demise, highlighting his contributions to social service and regional welfare.

Charak had been unwell for some time and breathed his last in Jammu. His political career was marked by a focus on public welfare and the upliftment of the people. As a cabinet minister, he played a pivotal role in the PDP–Congress government, and his tenure was noted for initiatives aimed at improving education and social infrastructure in Jammu.

Beyond politics, Charak’s work in promoting Dogra culture and establishing educational institutions strengthened his reputation as a community leader. The Dogra Sadar Sabha, under his leadership, became an important platform for cultural preservation and social advocacy in the region.

Condolences poured in from across the political spectrum, reflecting the respect he commanded. Leaders highlighted his dedication, integrity, and efforts to enhance regional development, marking his death as a significant loss to the political and social fabric of Jammu and Kashmir.
