HAL confirms five Tejas jets ready for IAF, with nine more awaiting engines from GE Aerospace.

New Delhi: State-run aerospace giant Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) announced on Thursday that five Tejas light combat aircraft are fully ready for delivery to the Indian Air Force (IAF).
The 83-jet deal for the Tejas Mk-1A, valued at ₹48,000 crore, was signed by the Defence Ministry in February 2021. Deliveries have faced delays due to GE Aerospace missing several deadlines for supplying the aircraft engines.
“The HAL confirms that five aircraft are fully ready for delivery, incorporating major contracted capabilities in accordance with the agreed specifications,” a HAL spokesperson said.
The spokesperson added, “An additional nine aircraft have already been built and flown. Upon receipt of engines from GE, these aircraft will be made ready for delivery.” The spokesperson also noted that all design and development issues are being addressed in an “expedited manner”.
The Tejas is a single-engine, multi-role fighter capable of operating in high-threat environments and performing air defence, maritime reconnaissance and strike missions.
HAL is in active discussions with the IAF to ensure early induction. “The HAL has received five engines from GE as on date. The supply position from GE is positive, and the future delivery outlook aligns with HAL’s delivery plans,” the spokesperson said.
She further assured, “HAL assures that it will meet the guidance projected for the current financial year.”
The IAF is keen on inducting the Tejas jets as the number of fighter squadrons has declined to 30, below the sanctioned strength of 42.
