South 24 Parganas: Tabulation of ballots for the high-stakes Falta Assembly constituency repoll in West Bengal shifted decisively on Sunday, as Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Debangshu Panda established a commanding advantage while electoral officials advanced through the 21 scheduled rounds of counting under rigorous institutional security.

Panda secured an initial lead of more than 9,000 votes following the opening round of tabulation. The atmosphere surrounding the designated counting facilities quickly turned celebratory for BJP loyalists, with crowds gathering to distribute confections and chant slogans as subsequent updates expanded Panda's margin.

According to data released by the Election Commission of India (ECI), Panda widened his advantage to a margin of 14,514 votes by the conclusion of the fifth round. Sambhu Nath Kurmi of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) held second place, followed by the Indian National Congress (INC) nominee Abdur Razzak Molla in third. Jahangir Khan of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), who had publicly withdrawn from active campaigning prior to the election, trailed heavily in fourth place.

"I am a son of Falta's soil. I would want Falta to stay peaceful, healthy and good. I want more and more development for Falta," Khan had said during an earlier press conference.

The TMC executive committee later issued a clarification stating that Khan's withdrawal was a personal choice rather than an official party directive. Because statutory withdrawal deadlines had already elapsed, Khan's name remained on the physical ballots, though the decision left the TMC effectively absent from the active contest.

Security Measures and Voter Turnout

Law enforcement personnel maintained a strict security perimeter around Diamond Harbour Women's University, which served as the centralised counting venue, to ensure the tabulation proceeded without disruption.

A BJP representative expressed confidence regarding the developing results and praised the integrity of the voting system.

"We are feeling very good. As per our calculations, the BJP is heading towards a decisive victory. The election was conducted very fairly, and today the common people of Falta have given their verdict. There was an atmosphere of fear earlier, but now the people have spoken. Jahangir Khan is irrelevant now, and the law will take its course," the worker told ANI.

The repoll occurred on Thursday under substantial institutional oversight. By 1 p.m. on election day, the 144 Falta Assembly constituency had registered an approximate voter turnout of 60.43 per cent.

Upon the completion of the 11th round of counting (out of 21), Panda maintained his lead with 72,082 votes, holding a 44,891-vote advantage over Kurmi, who possessed 27,191 votes.

Context of the Repoll

The ECI mandated the fresh election following reports of widespread irregularities during the regular 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, which were conducted across two primary phases on April 23 and April 29.

The regulatory body noted that the directive for the Falta repoll was issued "on consideration of severe electoral offences and subversion of the democratic process during the polling in a large number of polling stations on April 29."

The broader 2026 legislative elections resulted in the BJP forming its initial administration in West Bengal by capturing 207 assembly seats, with Suvendu Adhikari assuming office as Chief Minister.
