EC calls Rahul Gandhi’s remarks on Maharashtra polls “unsubstantiated” and says they disrespect India’s electoral process

New Delhi: The Election Commission on Friday dismissed Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s claims regarding the Maharashtra Assembly polls, describing them as unsubstantiated. The Commission also termed his remarks on the state’s electoral rolls as an affront to the rule of law.
In a strongly worded statement, the EC said that casting aspersions on the Commission by alleging bias following an unfavourable electoral outcome is “completely absurd”. It noted that all relevant facts concerning the allegations had already been provided in its response to the Congress party on December 24 last year, a document that remains publicly available on the Commission’s official website.
The poll body said these facts are consistently ignored in repeated accusations.
The Commission asserted that all elections in India are conducted strictly in accordance with the law, and the scale and accuracy of Indian elections are internationally recognised and praised.
It further warned that the dissemination of misinformation not only disrespects the law but also tarnishes the image of representatives from political parties themselves. The EC said such actions demoralise the lakhs of election staff who work diligently and transparently during the electoral process.
